Book Review: Once Ghosted, Twice Shy

Once Ghosted, Twice Shy
Reluctant Royals, Book 2.5

By Alyssa Cole
Released: January 2019

Alyssa Cole returns with a fun, sexy romance novella in the Reluctant Royals series!

While her boss the prince was busy wooing his betrothed, Likotsi had her own love affair after swiping right on a dating app. But her romance had ended in heartbreak, and now, back in NYC again, she’s determined to rediscover her joy—so of course she runs into the woman who broke her heart.

When Likotsi and Fabiola meet again on a stalled subway train months later, Fab asks for just one cup of tea. Likotsi, hoping to know why she was unceremoniously dumped, agrees. Tea and food soon leads to them exploring the city together, and their past, with Fab slowly revealing why she let Likotsi go, and both of them wondering if they can turn this second chance into a happily ever after.

Likotsi and Fabiola are absolutely fantastic together!! I adored Likotsi in A Princess in Theory as Thabiso’s right hand, and I couldn’t wait for her own story! Fabiola (Fab), the daughter of Haitian immigrants, is an AMAZING new character and a perfect match for Likotsi. PSA: Fab is *bisexual* and I think I’m going to pass out all over again!!! 💗💗💗 I couldn’t have picked a better story as my first sapphic contemporary romance. (Cole, please write more for the queers!!)

The Reluctant Royals series is one of my favorites! Strong, smart, fiercely loving WOC take lead in each book!! Each woman is different in their own right, but all have superb and important stories. I love Cole’s writing. It’s witty, heartwarming, sexy, and intelligent. I appreciate that Cole doesn’t shy away from tough topics, either. Each topic is well thought out and handled beautifully. The representations of each character is what keeps me coming back for more!

I had really high expectations going into this, and I devoured it in one sitting! Just so we’re all on the same page… this isn’t something I do very often! In this case, I couldn’t get myself to put it down until I finished it even though I started it at bedtime (oops!). It is one of the best depictions of love-at-first-sight (swipe) I’ve read. The first time I fell in love it was quick—within a few days, quick—so for me, Likotsi and Fab’s love story is not only fathemable but completely real.

It’s quite amazing that it’s only a novella because there is so much packed into it and it’s entirely satisfying. It’s the first time in the series that the chapters flip back and forth between the present and the past. It created a bit of mystery as to why Fab severed ties absolutely 8 months previously and I was invested in how the mystery was going to unravel, just as Likotsi was.

Likotsi Adelele, mother of schedules and slayer of inefficiencies…

Likotsi is still my queer queen! 💕 Her style is Off. The. Charts. (Let’s take a moment here to appreciate how gorgeous all of the covers are in this series! 😍) She’s unbelievably sexy without even trying, but confident and aware enough to know what she’s sending out to the world. (Thank you!) Beneath it all, there is a lot of heart in this novella. Kotsi shows her vulnerable side for the first time, and it’s breathtaking. I laughed, cried, and fell in love… You just might too!

“Finding a sexual partner is easy,” Likotsi replied. “Finding someone that makes you need to know more about them is not.”
